Abstract

The invention comprises (a) compounds of formula <FORM:1057931/C2/1> wherein Z is a carboxyl, formyl or hydroxymethyl group, P is a hydrogen atom or a C1- 8 alkyl group and Q is a C1- 8 alkyl group or a phenyl group, and (b) a process for preparing compounds of formula <FORM:1057931/C2/2> by selective oxidation of a compound of formula <FORM:1057931/C2/3> wherein R is a hydroxy or acyloxy group to form a 3-keto-10-hydroxymethylene compound of the invention, optionally oxidizing this to a 10-formyl compound of the invention and/or oxidizing a 10-hydroxymethylene or 10-formyl product to a 10-carboxy compound of the invention and either (1) treating a 10-formyl or 10-carboxymethyl compound with an alkali metal hydroxide or (ii) pyrolysing or treating with a mineral acid a 10-carboxy-compound.
