[Also in Division H5] A counterbalancing arrangement, for use in X-ray apparatus, for example, utilizes a pivotally mounted counterbalance weight located at a position remote from the member to be balanced, coupling means being provided between the two to cause corresponding and opposite counterbalance movement of the weight relative to its pivot when the member undergoes movement relative to its support. In the X-ray application, the counterbalance weight 9 balances the image layer devices 7 which are movable with respect to a carriage 5, itself movable longitudinally of the table 4, which can rotate about a horizontal axis through pivot 3. The weight 9 is supported by a piston-cylinder unit 13 pivoted at 15, and the assembly 7 is supported by a similar unit 12. These are linked by flexible conduits 17, 18 such that any movement of assembly 7 relative to its cylinder 12 is balanced by opposite movement of the weight 9. A coupling 19 between the pivots 3 and 15, in the form of a torque transmitting cable, arranges for pivoting of the weight assembly in an opposite direction to any tilting of the table.
