A lifejacket has its front portion (D), Fig. 2 (not shown), anchored to the wearer's person by webs (F) so that with his chest it forms a pocket (G) closed at the sides by wedge-shaped panels (H) of flexible material. The general design of the equipment turns the wearer so as to face oncoming waves or swell. The pocket traps upwardly-moving water utilizing its kinetic energy to assist the buoyancy and increase the freeboard of the equipment. For a stole-like appliance the two lobes co-operate with the wearer's chest to form two distinct pockets.
