Abstract
In a process and apparatus for ladle degassing and subsequent vacuum casting, the ladle and ingot mould are placed in a vacuum chamber, the ladle degassing stage being terminated by opening an externally operable stopper. Degassing in the ladle may be incomplete so that a mild boiling action occurs in the mould. In the drawing (not shown) a vacuum vessel is divided into two parts in the upper of which is placed the ladle of metal while in the lower there is placed one or more ingot moulds. Where a plurality of ingots are to be cast, the moulds may be arranged on a turntable whereby they can in turn be located below the tapping nozzle; alternatively the ladle may be supported on a rotatable mounting.
