Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the effect of degassing molten metal in a ladle, in vacuum degassing treatment by RH process, by making gas blowing inlets facing the tangential directions of the circumference of a snorkel in one of snorkels for circulating the metal through a vacuum vessel and by blowing an inert gas. CONSTITUTION:Two snorkels 3-1,3-2 of RH type vacuum degassing apparatus 1 lined with refractories 1a are dipped in molten metal in ladle 4. Apparatus 1 is evacuated through exhaust port 2. The metal in ladle 4 rises and enters apparatus 1 through the snorkels. At this time, an inert gas such as Ar is blown into one snorkel 3-1 through gas blowing inlets 11 made in snorkel 3-1 in the tangential directions of the inside. Molten metal in snokel 3-1 rises while turning by the action of the gas blown, and hence the metal is well mixed with Ar, stirred, and degassed. Molten metal in snorkel 3-2 falls into ladle 4. Thus, the molten metal in ladle 4 is circulated through apparatus 1 and refined by degassing.
