Abstract

Conversion of ammonium to nitrate in soil is inhibited by treatment of the soil with a 2,5,6- or 2,4,5,6-pyrimidine derivative. The pyrimidine derivative may be 2-amino, chloro, or methyl; 4-chloro or amino; 5-chloro, nitro, bromo, or amino; and 6-methyl or chloro. 1 part of pyrimidine derivative per 100 parts of soil may be applied. The pyrimidine derivative may be applied together with a fertilizer, inert powdered solid, surface active agent, water, or an organic liquid. The fertilizer may be ammonia, ammonium salt, urea, potassium salt, or phosphate. The inert powdered solid may be talc, chalk, vermiculite, bentonite, or diatomaceous earth. The surface active agent may be sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate. The organic liquid may be petroleum distillate or ethyl acetate. The pyrimidine derivative may be applied as dust, granules, or emulsion.
