Abstract

1,056,169. Electronic side-man. SEEBURG CORPORATION. May 15, 1964 [Sept. 23, 1963], No.20296/64. Heading G5J. The Specification describes an electronic side-man consisting of a number of electronic sound sources 26, 27, 28, which simulate e.g. drums, blocks, and cymbals respectively and which are energized one or more at a time in a predetermined sequence to produce various rhythms. A rotating contact 25 driven by a synchronous motor itself controlled by a variable-frequency oscillator connects a pulsing voltage V to each of terminals 1, 2, 3 in turn. Some of these terminals are connected to one of the sound sources, some to more than one but the invention consists in the provision of diodes 138-145 which enables a number of sources to be pulsed from a single terminal while isolating the sources from each other. Thus the rotating contact will, in position 1, pulse all of sources 26, 27, and 28 through diodes 138, 141 and 143, and 141 only, respectively; in position 2 source 26 only is pulsed and in position 3 sources 26 and 28 are pulsed, diode 138 acting to prevent transmission of the pulse on contact 3 to source 27. In order to increase the versatility of the arrangement each of the sound sources is connected to one of the wafers of a manual selector switch 31 the contacts of which are ganged together to give various combinations of instruments. Silicon diodes are used. In further arrangements (Fig. 5, not shown) separate voltage sources are used for each sound source, the rotating contact acting to complete an earth path.
