Abstract
1,150,603. Electrophonic musical instruments. NIPPON COLUMBIA K.K. 29 April, 1966 [30 April, 1965], No. 18872/66. Heading G5J. An automatic rhythm player or " side man " comprises a pulse oscillator the output pulses of which successively energize the inputs of a translator (e.g. a diode matrix), the outputs of which control sound generators corresponding to different instruments. As described eight pulses per bar produced by an oscillator 1 are applied to a circuit 2 comprising cascaded toggles F 1 to F 3 and AND gates G 1 to G 8 which sequentially energize input lines L 1 to L 8 of a diode matrix. Output lines S 1 to S 4 of the matrix are connected to sound generators M 1 to M 4 each corresponding to a different instrument and operating a common loudspeaker 6. The locations of the diodes determine which tone generators function during each time interval. Switches 7 1 to 7 4 can be opened to disable selected generators. To produce a more complex rhythm which repeats every two bars, a toggle Fx tripped by the pulses applied to line L 1 enables AND gates A and A<SP>1</SP> alternately in successive bars. Thus during alternate bars the output line S 1 is disconnected from the generator M 1 and an additional output line S 1 <SP>1</SP> with a different arrangement of diodes is used to control this generator. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown) a number of output lines similar to S 1 and S 1 <SP>1</SP> are provided for each generator and in place of the toggle Fx and AND gates A and A<SP>1</SP> selector switches are used. In a further modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the diode matrix has sixteen input lines, and sixteen pulses (i.e. sixteen time intervals) per bar are used.
