Abstract

Novel steroid compounds of the gonane structure characterized in that the steroid molecule has present a 4-chlorine atom 4(5), 9(10) and 11(12) double bonds, a 3-keto group, a 13b -alkyl group and a 17b -OR group, R representing a hydrogen atom or an acyl group having 1-18 carbon atoms are obtained in a process in which the corresponding 17b -OR-substituted - gona - 4,9,11 - triene - 3 - one is chlorinated at the 4-position by reaction with a chlorinating agent, e.g. t-butyl hypochlorite or sulphuryl chloride. Pharmaceutical compositions having anabolic activity and containing the above compounds are administered orally, perlingually, transcutaneously or rectally.
