Abstract

1,055,391. Treating with ultrasonic energy. G. A. D. GORDON. Oct. 1, 1964 [Oct. 23. 1963], No. 41920/63. Addition to 998,173. Heading A5R. Apparatus for locating and destroying tissue cells within the body by ultrasonic energy comprises an ultrasonic transducer assembly arranged for producing both strong and weak impulses, the transducer being marable by a sterotaxic device so that the weak impulses may be used to locate the cells by an echosounding principle and the strong impulses then applied to a chosen point within the tissue to destroy the cells. The transducer 9 is mounted in a support 8 which is movable, by operating handles 2, 3, 4 of the stereotaxic device. in three planes at right angles to one another, the focus of the transducer thus being correspondingly moved. The transducer is pivotal with a plate 10 within the support 8 without altering the position of its focus so that the ultrasonic beam may be directed for maximum effect, i.e. so that it strikes the group of cells normally. An extension 29 from the support is connected through a universal joint 27 and a parallel linkage with a pointer 30 which moves over recording paper mounted on a support 37, 38. The paper is such that it may be electrically connected to a voltage source and will only permit the pointer to mark it when the voltage exceeds a predetermined value. The position of the pointer indicates the position of the focus of the transducer. The parallel linkage is supported by a universal joint 28 fixed to a second stereotaxic device 31- 35 by which it may be positioned vertically below the first joint 27. The linkage is rotatable about the joints 27, 28 so that it may be located parallel to either of the vertical planes of movement of the support 8. In use, the transducer is first connected to a source of weak impulses, e.g. a conventional flaw detector, and the transducer is moved so that its focus scans the region of the body in which the cells are to be located, e.g. the brain. When the focus coincides with the surface of the group of cells concerned, an echo impulse is transmitted via the transducer to the recording paper, thus permitting a mark to be made on the paper by the pointer. When scanning is completed. the marks on the paper give a record of the shape of the group of cells in the vertical plane or planes chosen for the investigation. The transducer is then connected to a source of high power impulses and its focus positioned by adjusting the pointer to a desired position relative to the recorded shape for destroying the located cells. Two interchangeable transducers may be used for applying the weak and strong impulses respectively. The transducer which is not being used is stored in a temperature-controlled bath 12 of saline solution.
