A magnetic thin film element comprises a metal or metallized substrate 1 having a relative rough surface, an insulating layer 3 which provides a smoother surface, and a magnetic layer 4 which extends beyond the insulating layer. The boundary zone where the magnetic layer contacts the substrate exhibits a higher coercive field strength than the central zone. The substrate may be electroplated silver and the instating layer may be silicon monoxide 2 thick which is produced by vaporization. The magnetic layer may be NiFe alloy and may be produced by vaporization, circular or square elements being produced by masking or etching.
