Abstract

A change-speed gear for a motor cycle or scooter comprises a series of pinions 8, 9 ... 12 mounted on a hollow driven shaft 7, successive gear changes being effected through the engagement of radial locking balls 18 by the stepwise movement of a sliding sleeve 16 in response to repeated strokes of an inner axial shift rod 19. The latter carries a pair of pawls 21, 22 engageable in axially spaced recesses 27 in sleeve 16, pawl 22 being effective to move the sleeve to the left for upshifts and pawl 21 to move the sleeve to the right for downshifts. The pawls are controlled by the axial setting of a floating sleeve 20 between shift rod 19 and sleeve 16, the member 20 being formed with a pair of slots 26. For upshift sleeve 20 is moved to the left against an abutment 31 to engage a recess 24 with a shift rod ball detent 23 to allow pawl 22 to project through its associated slot 26 beyond sleeve 20 and to hold pawl 21 retracted, while for downshift sleeve 20 is moved in the opposite direction against a further abutment 30 so that ball detent 23 engages a second sleeve recess 25 to project pawl 21 and retract pawl 22. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the pawl control sleeve 20 is held fixed. The shift rod 19 may be operated manually, electrically, hydraulically or pneumatically.
