[Also in Division C5] Compounds of alkaline earth metals are dispersed in oil by a process comprising (a) mixing with anhydrous methanol an alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide in the ratio of at least 5 parts by weight of methanol to 1 part by weight of the oxide or hydroxide; (b) introducing an inorganic acid or acid anhydride which forms a water-insoluble salt with the alkaline earth metal into the mixture at a temperature above that at which an exothermic reaction is initiated, thereby forming a methanol-solvated complex between the acid or acid anhydride and the oxide or hydroxide; (c) before gelling occurs, forming an emulsion of the complex and methanol with the oil and an emulsifying agent comprising an oil-soluble organic acid having at least 12 carbon atoms or a salt of such an acid; and (d) removing methanol from the emulsion. Alkaline earth metal oxides or hydroxides exemplified are calcium oxide, barium oxide, hydrated lime. The oils may be mineral oils, residual oils, medicinal grade oils or fatty acid ester oils. The inorganic acid component is preferably carbon dioxide; also mentioned are boric and phosphoric acids. The dispersant may be oil soluble sulphonic or phosphoric acids, fatty acids, alkyl aromatic acids, petroleum acids or alkyl phenols; dispersants exemplified are oleic acid, calcium mahogany sulphonate. The drawing (not shown) is a flow diagram illustrating the preparation of dispersions of calcium compounds in lubricating oil.
