Abstract
1,051,957. Expansion joints. R. L. PARE. April 2, 1965, No. 14031/65. Heading E1G. A roadway expansion joint comprises an elastomeric rectangular block 60 having an elongated bar 63 embedded therein nearer the bottom than the top, the bar being narrower than the block. The block has cavities 55 positioned mainly laterally of the bar and may have transition cavities 61. The block is secured to the concrete slabs 36, 37 of the roadway by bolts 65 passing through bonded metal end blocks 50, an embedded plate or bonded top and bottom plates. Alternatively the block may have a dovetail section to mate with metal edge members 42, the angles of the dovetails allowing downward movement of the block under axial load. The central block may be in tongue and groove and spline connection with separate voided blocks in similar connection with the securing blocks.
