Abstract
1419420 Expansion joint M ARAI 5 July 1973 32186/73 Heading E1B An expansion joint suitable for bridging joins between pavement slabs in roads, especially elevated roads and road bridges, comprises two opposed horizontal flat surfaced longitudinally extending securing parts 2 mountable each on a respective side of a join such that their flat surfaces will be flush with the surface of the pavement, each securing part 2 including a horizontal cushion course 4 bonded on or under a flat horizontal steel fixing strip 3 and a vertical cushion course 6 projecting from each horizontal cushion course 2; an expansion bridge 5 connecting together the two securing parts 2 along their length and being formed as a V- or wave-shape in transverse cross-section to include flexible divergent parts 7 and at least one apex part 8, said expansion bridge 5 and horizontal and vertical cushion courses all being an integral moulding of elastic material, e.g. synthetic resin; and stepped holes 15 in each fixing strip 2 at regular intervals, each stepped hole 15 including a nut receiving hole 13 and a concentric anchor bolt receiving hole 14. The joint is secured to both sides of the join by anchor bolts 35 set into the road and projecting upwardly through the anchor bolt holes. The expansion joint may be provided with tongue and groove connections at the longitudinal ends for interlocking aligned preceding and succeeding expansion joints, each tongue and groove extending transversely across the joint. The expansion bridge may be provided with a stepped extension extending transversely across one longitudinal end. The expansion bridge preferably has a longitudinal groove in the upper surface of the or each apex and a longitudinal protruding ridge defining the bottom of the apex. A plurality of shallow grooves may be provided on the surface of the expansion joint to provide a gripping surface for road vehicles. The uppermost surface of the expansion bridge may be lower than the flat surface of the securing part, in which case the vertical cushion course projects downwardly from the horizontal cushion to reach an edge of the underside of the fixing strip (Fig. 5, not shown). Alternatively the horizontal cushion course may be narrow in relation to the width of the fixing strip and be bonded to a slanting surface, the vertical cushion course projecting downwardly from the horizontal cushion course to reach an edge of the underside of the fixing strip, a lower horizontal cushion course integral with the vertical cushion course being secured under the fixing strip (Fig. 7, not shown). In another embodiment (Fig. 8) the horizontal cushion course is bonded under the fixing strip and the vertical cushion course projects upwardly to engage a lower recess in the fixing strip, the uppermost surface of the expansion bridge meeting the uppermost edge of the vertical cushion course. The fixing strip may include a downwardly extending flange and the vertical cushion course may then project downwardly from the horizontal cushion course to contact the flange (Fig. 16).
