Abstract
1,050,239. Tufting machines. ELLISON TUFTING MACHINERY Ltd. Oct. 25, 1965 [Nov. 30, 1964], No. 48545/64. Heading DIG. In a tufting machine adapted to produce high and low tuft loops, under the control of a pattern element, at least one electrical connection reversal means is interposed between the pattern element and the mechanism of the machine. As shown, rollers 24,25 advance base fabric 29, and a synchro-generator 26, driven by roller 24, is connected via a reversing relay 16 to a motor 15 driving a pattern drum 14 in synchronism with \ roller 24. Associated with the pattern drum is a plurality of photo-cell pick-up devices 13, each of which is connected via an amplifier 2 to a respective solenoid 19 adapted to operate a control valve 20 for a pneumatic cylinder 21. A brake shoe 22, associated with cylinder 21, bears on a yarn 30, whereby the tuft loop is shortened by energisation of solenoid 19. A control box 1 has a reversing connection 11 to the ampliers 2, a reversing connection 17 to the relay 16 and a connection 28' to a pick-up device 31 associated with the pattern drum. The control box contains a stepping relay having banks 51, 52, 53, Fig. 3 (not shown). Each bank has eight contacts and is stepped, under the influence of pick-up 31, at each revolution of drum 14. Bank 51 is connected to a switch 5. and to a relay CR, Fig. 3, and is adapted, on manual closure of switch 5, to energise relay CR at each alternate step. Energisation of relay CR closes a switch in connection 11 to reverse the normal high or low tuft selecting function of pick-up 13. Bank 52 is connected to a switch 4 and to a relay PR, Fig. 3, and is adapted, on closure of switch 4. to energise relay PR on the first four contacts for reversing the normal direction of rotation of motor 15. Bank 53 's connected to a switch 3 and to the relays CR and PR, and is adapted, on closure of switch 3, to energise relays CR and PR on the last four contacts. Normal pattern is produced when switches 3. 4 and 5 are all open, and variations may be effected by closing said switches selectively.
