Abstract

1,049,939. Wells &c. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. March 19, 1964, No. 11717/64. Heading E1F. A formation 2 is fractured in a substantially horizontal plane 1 by injecting fracturing fluid through a passage 6 from a middle zone 9 which is at higher pressure than the lower and upper zones 8, 11, the height of the zone 9 being not greater than its diameter. The zones are formed by radially extensible packers 7, 10 set in a casing 3 fixed to the formation by cement 5. Liquid may be removed from the zones 8, 11 and the casing may be thinner than usual. The passage comprises an annular slot extending through the casing and cement. The slot may be formed by a cutter or by an explosive after the casing is cemented, or a casing having a ring of slots may be cemented and the slots extended to form the slot by the pressure of the fracturing fluid. The fracturing fluid which has gel properties which diminish after a time may be followed by a fluid having a low penetration into the formation. The fluids may contain propping agents. In a modification the packers are combined with radially extensible cutters and may be rotated by the supporting string or by an hydraulic turbine.
