Abstract

1402001 Withdrawing hazardous gases from mineral deposits EXXON PRODUCTION RESEARCH CO 19 Sept 1972 [12 Oct 1971] 43281/72 Headings E1F and E1X Hazardous gas is withdrawn from a watersaturated subterranean formation containing a mineral deposit prior to or during mining of the deposit, by drilling a plurality of wells into the formation, withdrawing water from the formation to establish permeability to gas within the formation, and withdrawing hazardous gas from the formation by means of the wells. The wells are of a conventional type having a large borehole lined with a metal casing with a smaller diameter pipe string disposed therein, there being no packers in the annular space between the casing and pipe string. The pipe string extends below the bottom of the formation to lower the water level in the well to a level below the formation, and a pump is provided within the pipe string at or near its bottom. Communication between the interior of the casing and the formation is provided by means of perforations in the casing. In the case of an existing mine, the wells are drilled at locations around the mine, and air is introduced into the mine at a pressure greater than the pressure existing in the wells to cause the air and hazardous gas to flow from the mine to the wells. In the case where a mine working has not been opened, a plurality of wells are drilled around the periphery of the mineral deposit and air enters the deposit via the casing annular space which is open to atmosphere. Once permeability to gas has been established within the formation, a mine working is opened and a vacuum can be applied to the casing annular space to withdraw the hazardous gas e.g. methane, hydrogen sulphide, or radon, therefrom.
