Abstract

To increase the mechanical strength and abrasion resistance of green pellets of iron ore, roasting residues or the like which are to be reduced in a rotary furnace, dust formed in the rotary furnace is collected and applied to the surface of the pellets. Bentonite, hydrated lime or calcium chloride is added, as the active ingredient, to the dust initially formed; thereafter the dust may contain sufficient additive. The amount of dust applied is such that the total content of additive in the pellets is no more than 2.5%, instead of about 5% in known processes wherein the additive is distributed throughout the pellets. When the additive is hydrated lime, this is converted to calcium carbonate by carbon dioxide contained in the furnace gases, and the dust is calcined and slaked before re-use. The treatment may take place in the rotary furnace, or in a preceding apparatus, e.g. a shaft furnace. The method is applicable in the process of Specification 1,007,293, wherein the green pellets incorporate a fuel containing volatile constituents, particularly a fuel with a low ash fusing point.
