Abstract

1,049,786. Vapour discharge apparatus. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 21, 1963 [Aug. 22, 1962], No. 32286/62. Heading H1D. A low-pressure vapour or gas-filled electrical discharge device comprises an annular anode 6 and cathode 8 spaced apart along an annular gas or vapour filled discharge space 2, means for generating a first magnetic field 12 in an azimuthal direction, i.e. a direction rotationally around the cylinder, concentric with the tube walls 3 in the discharge space 2 to tend to oppose the discharge between cathode 8 and anode 6, means for generating a second magnetic field 10 in an axial direction along the discharge space 2 to tend to assist the discharge, and means to control the azimuthal and axial fields to render the tube conductive or non-conductive. As shown, the means for producing the azimuthal field 12 is a conductor 13, alternatively it may be a toroid. The means for providing the axial field 10 is cylindrical winding 11 encircling the envelope 3. The azimuthal field is applied continuously and the axial field is applied as a pulse for a switch application or cyclically for a rectifier application.
