Abstract

Aqueous homogeneous liquid detergent compositions comprise (1) 1-40 wt. per cent (based on the whole composition) of one or more detergent surfactants selected from groups (a), (b) and (c) as follows: (a) amine oxides of formula R1R2R3N - > O, where R1 is an aliphatic, monohydroxy aliphatic, or alkoxy monohydroxypropyl radical in which the alkyl or alkoxy group is C10- 20, and R2 and R3 are each C1- 3 alkyl or alkanol radicals, (b) phosphine oxides of formula R4R5\R6P - > O, where R4 is a C8- 18 aliphatic or monohydroxy aliphatic radical, and R5 and R6 are each C1- 3 alkyl or alkanol radicals, and (c) sulphoxides of formula <FORM:1049735/C4-C5/1> where R7 is a C10- 20 aliphatic radical which may carry one hydroxy substituent and may be interrupted by one or two ether linkages; (2) 0-40% of one or more polyvalent electrolyte salts; (3) a solubilizing amount of either a furoate, an ethyl benzene phosphonate, or a compound of formula R8-COOM, where M is a water-soluble cation, and R8 is a C2- 7 unsaturated aliphatic radical, a C6- 12 aromatic, substituted aromatic or aralkyl radical, a C3- 6 branched chain saturated aliphatic radical, or a C1- 5 chloro-substituted saturated aliphatic radical; and (4) the balance substantially water. Typical of many specified components (3) are potassium sorbate, sodium trimethyl acetate, sodium benzoate, and potassium tetrolate. Component (2), when present, may be sodium sulphate, a sodium or potassium phosphate or polyphosphate (e.g. tetrapotassium pyrophosphate), a methylene or ethylene diphosphonate (e.g. trisodium ethane-1-hydroxy-1,1-diphosphonate), sodium, potassium or ammonium ethylene diamine tetraacetate or nitriloacetate, or a silicate. The compositions may also contain conventional ingredients, e.g. carboxymethylcellulose.
