Abstract

Pentaerythritol esters comprising esters of pentaerythritol and a mixture of from two to six monocarboxylic alkanoic acids with from 5 to 9 carbon atoms, the average number of carbon atoms in the mixture being in the 6.0 to 7.25 range, the maximum per cent of carbon atoms contributed by straight chain 8-9 carbon acids being 60% and that by branched acids being 45% of the said average number (see Division C2) are used as or in lubricating compositions. The acids may be normal valeric, caproic, caprylic, and pelargonic and the branched chain acids may be isopentanoic and 2-methyl pentanoic acids.ALSO:Pentaerythritol esters comprising esters of pentaerythritol and a mixture of from two to six monocarboxylic alkanoic acids with from 5 to 9 carbon atoms, the average number of carbon atoms in the mixture being in the 6.0 to 7.25 range, the maximum per cent of carbon atoms contributed by straight chain 8-9 carbon acids being 60% and that by branched acids being 45% of the said average number are claimed and are used as or in lubricating compositions. The pentaerythritol may be of a technical grade containing mono-, di-, and tripentaerythritol and the acids may be normal valeric, caproic, caprylic and pelargonic and the branched chain acids may be isopentanoic and 2-methyl pentanoic acids. The esters may be prepared by heating the pentaerythritol and acids in liquid phase under reflux. The products are mixed esters, and examples describe the preparation of esters from a commercial isopentanoic acid and pelargonic acid, and a mixture of n-valeric, caproic, heptanoic, caprylic and pelargonic acids. The esters have lubricating properties.
