Abstract

A heat-insulating composition for use in lining the risers or other parts of metal-casting moulds comprises a particulate refractory material such as sand, dolomite, alumina, chamotte, grog or refractory silicates, waterproofed wood flour or sawdust, and up to 15% by weight of the composition (so as to provide not more than 8% of silicate in the composition) of aqueous alkali metal silicate, the composition being hardened by treatment with carbon dioxide. The wood particles are waterproofed by spraying with a solution of a water-resistant wax, polymer, or cellulose derivative. Preferably sodium silicate having a SiO2 : Na2O ratio of about 2:1 and in a 35-50% solution is used. The composition may consist of 70-85 parts by weight of sand, 5-15 parts of silicate solution, and 5-15 parts of wood particles; in addition, a small amount of a thermosetting binder and up to 10% by weight of a fibrous refractory material such as asbestos, fibre glass, or slag wood, or of a non-water permeable organic fibrous material such as nylon or cellulose acetate may be included.
