Abstract
1,049,390. Metal oxide resistor furnaces. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Dec. 11, 1964 [Dec. 19, 1963], No. 50270/63. Heading H5H. A metal oxide resistor furnace comprises a zirconia-yttria tubular resistor 1 enclosed by an alumina tube 8 covered by a thin film 11 of platinum which acts as an auxiliary electric heater to bring the resistor 1 up to the temperature at which it conducts appreciable heating current, whereupon auxiliary heating is discontinued and the film 11 acts as a thermal reflector to reduce heat loss from the resistor 1. Current to the latter is passed from terminals 6 through platinumcoated alumina tubes 4 and zirconia - yttria contact blocks 2, 3. The assembly is completed by a thermally insulating tube 14 of quartz or alumina and alumina spacers 9, 10, 15. Further thermal barriers with heat reflecting surfaces may be provided, and members 2, 3, 4 may be omitted, the terminals 6 then being secured to platinumcoated surfaces of the resistor 1.
