Abstract

Halo- or arylhalo-alkanes or -alkenes are made by reacting perhaloalkanes or arylper-haloalkanes, which alkanes contain at least 2 carbon atoms and have at least 2 chlorine atoms, any remaining halogen atoms being fluorine, the 2 chlorine atoms being either on one carbon atom or on adjacent carbon atoms, with hydrazine or an amine having at least one saturated a -carbon atom carrying at least one hydrogen atom. "Saturated a -carbon atom" is defined as a carbon atom which has no double bonds of the type found in amides or heterocyclic amines such as pyridine. The reaction may be effected in the presence of a solvent or catalyst, preferably one containing a vari-valent metal, e.g. copper, or Ag, Co, Sn, Mn, Ni, Fe, Mo, Cr, Sb or V. Nitrogen bases specified are of the alkylamine, alkanolamine and cyclic amine series, as well as hydrazine. In examples, products obtained are: C2Cl4 and C2HCl3 from C2Cl6; CClF2.CHClF from CClF2 CCl2F; CCl2F.CHCl2 and CClF:CCl2 from CCl2F.CCl3; CCl2F.CHClF and CClF:CClF from CCl2F.CCl2F; CClF2.CHCl2 and CF2:CCl2 from CClF2.CCl3; and CF3.CHCl2 from CF3 CCl3.
