Abstract

1,048,633. Dispensing liquids by gaseous pressure. CARTER-WALLACE Inc. July 11, 1963 [Aug. 2, 1962], No. 27508/63. Heading F1R. In a device for heating a lather, such as shaving cream lathers and shampoo lathers, emerging from an aerosol container, the lather is delivered from the container to an outlet via a thin wide enclosed chamber heated by immersion in a body of hot water. A heating device, Fig. 4, is mounted on the top of a conventional aerosol container, after the combined spout and valve button have been removed from the latter, with a plunger 20 of the device located over the original valve actuator 9 and a flange 19 gripping the top of the container. Depression of a button 17 causes the plunger 20 to force the valve actuator 9 downwards as shown, and thereby move the passages 7 in a preferably rubber diaphragm 5 clear of an obturating sleeve 8. Lather thereby escapes through passages 7, 10, 11, 26, 42 and a nipple 44 to a thin wide chamber 38 of a cylindrical heat exchanger 34 formed by two cylinders 36, 37. The walls of the chamber 38 need not be parallel as shown. The passage 26 meters the lather flow to 4-8 c.c./sec. A body 12 supports the heat exchanger 34 in spaced relation to its bottom and side walls to enable hot water, supplied at the top of the body 12, to surround the heat exchanger 34 and thereby heat the lather passing therethrough to a nipple 37A and delivery spout 32. The heat exchanger is positively positioned by the "snap-in" action of nipples 37A and 44 into recesses in the body 12 and an arm 15 of a housing 14. The latter is preferably friction fitted over a sleeve 21 of the body 12. The body 12 is of plastics material such as linear polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene, and the heat exchanger 34 may be of non-metallic material but is preferably of metal, such as steel or aluminium. The heating device may be integral part of the aerosol container. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 6, a similar heating device is mounted on the side of a complete conventional container 1 by a clip 52, and a tube 42<SP>1</SP>, communicating with the interior of the heat exchanger, is connected to the delivery spout of the container 1. Alternative forms of the heat exchanger are shown in Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown). One form has two or more horizontally-spaced rectangular passages of narrow cross-section arranged vertically and connected in parallel with respect to flow, and a second form has a single passage of narrow cross-section arranged horizontally. The second form may be heated by periodic immersion in a mass of hot water prior to discharge of the lather. Various dimensions of the heating device are given in the Specification.
