[Also in Division E1] An excavator assembly-supporting base structure for allowing of excavation by the assembly in swampy ground is such that it can float on and move through water or can slide over swampy ground when advanced by power means on the structure hauling on a fixed cable and is guided in a straight line through the water or over the ground by guide surfaces formed on the underside of the structure. Preferably the guide surfaces are formed by one or more longitudinally extending keels on the flat bottom of the structure, which may comprise a central portion of rectangular section and side portions which do not contact the ground or water unless the structure is loaded offset of the longitudinal centre line thereof. The power means comprises two capstan heads arranged parallel to one another with the fixed cable passing to and fro several times between the heads, one at least of which is driven.
