Abstract

1427954 Suction dredging polymetallic nodules SOC GENERALE DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES ET MECANIQUES (ALSTHOM) 20 June 1973 [22 June 1972] 29245/73 Heading E1P An arrangement for suction dredging polymetallic nodules from deep sea beds involves the use of two surface ships: a first ship 1 receives nodules collected from a dredging bucket 4 via a suction tube 3, while a second ship 7 tows the bucket with line 6 and is also used to raise the bucket. The tube 3 is rigid except for an articulated section 5 which attaches to the bucket, and a line 8 links line 6 and the rigid portion of the suction tube. A tank 2 receives the material from the tube 3 in the embodiment shown and a separate transport system is employed between the tank and the ship 1. In another embodiment (Fig. 8, not shown) the tube 3 connects directly with the ship.
