Abstract

In a scutcher of the type having the speed of the pedal roller 21 (see Fig. not shown) altered in accordance with the thickness of the material at the roller 21, a P.I.V. gear 29a is included in the drive path to roller 21 and adjusted in response to variations in thickness of the web issuing from the scutcher, such variations being measured by a detector 33 associated with a movable calender roll 14. Thus a more regular output lap is obtained. The transmission from the detector 33 to gear 29a may be electro-mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic. The initial regulation of the speed of roller 21 is conventional i.e. the belt 28 of an opposed cone variable speed device is shifted via a mechanical linkage in accordance with the movements of the pedal assembly 22.
