Abstract

A linear paraformaldehyde of not more than 100 HCHO units is made by a process which comprises evaporating the H2O from an aqueous solution of formaldehyde within less than 15 minutes at a pressure of not above 400 mm. Hg and temperature from 40 DEG to 80 DEG C. in a thin film evaporator, continuously removing formaldehyde polymer from the evaporator within two minutes of its formation and cooling the polymer at a rate so as to obtain the desired degree of not more than 100 HCHO units of polymerization. The example describes the operation of the process giving a polymer of average 15 units.
