Abstract

The glass envelope of a discharge tube is manufactured by a process designed to minimize the entry into the tube of hydrogen from the burner combustion gases used to seal the tube-in which the discharge tube cylinder is provided with extensions at either end, an electrode supported by a lead-in wire is held within the assembly, a purge gas is introduced, and the glass is heated, and sealed, by a burner adjacent the junction of the extension and the cylinder, whereafter the residual extension is removed. The cylinder 1 (Figs. 1 to 8, not shown) with its extensions 3 and 4 and exhaust tube 2 is preferably held vertically, first one and then the other way up, each end being sealed in succession while in the lowermost position. The extensions are of reduced diameter with respect to the cylinder; an apertured baffle plate 11 is disposed around the lowermost extension; and nitrogen is maintained within the cylinder via exhaust tube 2, to reduce the flow of hydrogen from the water-cooled burners 20 and 21 to the ends of, and thence within, the extensions.
