Abstract

Novel steroids of the formula <FORM:1047708/C2/1> (wherein Y is = O or a R2b (OR1), R2 being hydrogen, C1- 8 alkyl, C2- 8 alkenyl or C2- 8 alkynyl, and R1 hydrogen or hydrocarbon carboxylic acyl of less than 12 carbon atoms which is optionally substituted; R is hydrogen or acyl of the type defined for R1; and X is fluorine or chlorine) are prepared by treating D 5 - androstene - 3b ,19 - diol - 17 - one - 3 acetate either with tosyl chloride in pyridine, followed by treatment of the 19-tosylate with a metal fluoride or chloride in a solvent to produce 19 - fluoro or chloro - D 5 - androsten-3b -ol-17-one acetate or with 2-chloro-1,1,2-trifluoro-triethylamine in a non-polar organic solvent to produce the 19-fluoro compound and then optionally saponifying the 3-acetates and/or reducing the 17-ketones and/or alkylating with an alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl magnesium halide the 17-ketones and/or esterifying any free hydroxy groups.
