A stapling machine comprises a housing having a pair of movable clinching anvils 5, 6 adapted to be lifted relatively to a staple driver 15 and the housing base 2 by means 9, 17, 18, Fig. 4 (not shown), the arrangement being such that in operation, initial downward movement of the driver causes the anvils to enter the material of the workpiece whilst simultaneously driving a staple therein, further movement of the driver causing the lifting means to lift the anvils and the material toward the base while driving home and clinching the staple between the anvils and the driver. The anvils 5, 6 are pivoted at 7, 8 on a plate 9 vertically slidable in the housing 1 and connected by links 17, 18 to the driver 15 which may be reciprocated manually. In order to effect the lifting movement of the anvils, a roller 23 is secured to the driver and moves through a slot 24 in the plate 9 and is adapted to actuate cam plate 12 during the latter part of the working stroke. The cam plate is pivoted on a pin 14 adjustably mounted in a slot formed in the front wall 10 of the housing 1. In a modification the pin 14 is adjusted in the slot by means of a flanged plate 39, Fig. 5 (not shown), which may be lifted against the action of a spring 44 and rotated so that, via a pin-and-slot connection 35, 44 with a second flanged plate 34 having cam slots 36, the pin 14 is raised or lowered; the plate 39 is then repositioned by means of a peg 42 engaging in one or other of holes 43 in the plate.
