Abstract

The heel of a seamless stocking is formed by introducing part courses in the heel portion during continuous rotary knitting. For this purpose the stocking is knitted on a multifeed circular machine and during production of the heel some of the feeders continue to feed yarn and knit complete circular courses 9 whilst other feeders only feed and knit their yarns to form short courses 10 within the confines of a central portion 7, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). The remaining feeders then feed and knit their yarns 8 to form short courses which are progressively varied and extend within the confines of irregular portions 8 on either side of the central portion 7. With this arrangement a pocket is formed in which the central portion 7 is composed of courses knitted at all the feeders whereas the marginal portions 8 contain a lesser number of courses and the instep knitted over the same period is restricted to courses knitted by those yarns which are continuously knitted throughout each revolution of the machine. Alternatively, instead of increasing the length of the courses in the portions 8 and then gradually reducing them as illustrated in Fig. 2, (not shown), the courses in these areas can be decreased and then lengthened. The short courses may be knitted of thicker or stronger yarns. Instead of knitting an additional short course extending beyond the edges of the central panel the main yarn may be reinforced over the same course length as would be occupied by the intermediate length course.
