Abstract

Combustible briquettes are produced from a mixture of a major amount of a finely-divided carbonaceous fuel and a minor amount of a binder which forms a thixotropic paste or gel with water, a thermosetting synthetic resin, a curing agent, if necessary, therefor and water, by shaping and curing, the curing being effected by high-frequency heating, for example by placing the briquettes on one of two spaced electrodes at high-frequency alternating voltage. Suitable binders include carbohydrate materials such as dextrins, starch and wheat flour (which are preferred), cellulose ethers, pectic, proteinaceous or vegetable materials, sulphite lye, or inorganic materials such as bentonite clay or waterglass. The resin may be liquid (preferred) phenol-formaldehyde or urea-formaldehyde, a specified curing-agent for the latter being NH4Cl + urea + water, or solid mixed powdered novolac and hexamethylene tetramine or spray-dried urea-formaldehyde resin. Anthracite is the preferred fuel. Sodium nitrate or saltpetre may be added as anti-smoking agents when bituminous fuels are used. Example 3 specifies by weight, 2000 parts anthracite dust, 200 water, 40 wheat flour, 40 aqueous urea-formaldehyde, condensate of 70% solids content, and 4 parts curing agent comprising NH4Cl (0.32), urea (1.6) and water (2.08).
