In a hydropneumatic suspension device for vehicles comprising a stepped cylinder 1, 18, 19 with a hollow plunger 2 which accommodates an elastic bag 4 filled with compressed gas and which is sealed against the upper part of the cylinder by means of a packing 3, the lower part 18, 19 of the cylinder accommodates a pumping device comprising a differential piston 5 carried by a spring 6 to pump liquid, which escapes from the pressure space A of the cylinder past the seal 3, back into the space A. The lower part of an outer jacket 7 comprises a liquid collecting space B which communicates, through openings 15, 16 and a suction valve 8, 20, with a pumping space C beneath the narrower portion of the piston 5 in the cylinder port 19. The wider part the piston 5 works in the cylinder part 18 and the piston has an axial bore 17 controlled by a spring-loaded valve 9. During a compression stroke the piston 5 descends to pump liquid from the space C past the valve 9 to the space A, replenishment of the pump space C taking place during a rebound stroke when the piston 5 rises and liquid is sucked into the space C past the valve 8. In the case where the pressure build-up in the compression space A is insufficient, during a compression stroke, to force the piston 5 downwards the latter is operated by a stop 14 carried by the plunger 2.
