Abstract
Octahydroanthracene is obtained in pure form from a mixture thereof with octahydrophenanthrene by forming the mixture into a slurry of solid in liquid, separating the solid and recrystallizing from an alcohol. The slurry is formed by cooling a liquid mixture to 10-50 DEG C. and the solid is recrystallized from a C1-C3 alcohol at - 20 DEG to 40 DEG C. Octahydroanthracene is formed in admixture with octahydrophenanthrene by disproportionation of tetralin in the presence of aluminium chloride or bromide or preferably hydrogen fluoride and boron trifluoride used in mol. ratio to tetralin of 1-100 mols. of H.F. and 0.1-10 mols. of BF3. Reaction is effected at 0-110 DEG C. under sufficient pressure to keep the H.F. liquid for 1 minute to 10 hours. The organic product is distilled, preferably under vacuum to recover the above mixture.
