Abstract

1 : 3 : 5-Tri-isopropylbenzene is prepared by reacting benzene with propylene using from 2.4 to 3.5 mols. of propylene per mol. of benzene in the presence of an acid reacting Friedel-Crafts alkylation catalyst. A preferred mol. ratio of propylene to benzene is between 2.8 : 1 and 3.2 : 1. The catalyst is aluminium chloride, hydrogen fluoride or boron trifluoride. Using the former catalyst a temperature in the range - 80 DEG to 150 DEG C. can be used with a reaction time between 0.1 and 10 hours. The hydrocarbon phase of the product is washed and distilled and the residue after removal of 1 : 3 : 5-tri-isopropylbenzene is recycled.
