[Also in Division C5] A compound labelled with 14C is prepared by neutron irradiation of a metallic nitride to convert nitrogen atoms to <SP>14</SP>C atoms, followed by hydrolysis of the irradiated nitride. <SP>14</SP>C- methane formed in the process may be converted into <SP>14</SP>CO 2 by electric discharge in the presence of O 2 or into a mixture of <SP>14</SP>C-hydrocarbons (propane, butane, ethane, propene, and acetylene) by electric discharge in the absence of O 2 . Apparatus is described for the hydrolysis of irradiated magnesium nitride and the separation of <SP>14</SP>C-methane from other hydrolysis products. Beryllium and aluminium nitrides may be used in place of magnesium nitride.
