1, 045, 624. Incorporating colour couplers in emulsions. GENERAL ANILINE & FILM CORPORATION. Feb. 13, 1964 [March 11, 1963], No. 6069/64. Heading G2C. Colour couplers, which are fast to diffusion and capable of forming upon colour development with a primary aromatic amino developing agent anazomethine, indoaniline or phenazonium dye image are incorporated in gelatino silver halide emulsions by dissolving them in butyrolactone, diluting the resultant solution with water or an aqueous solution containing a surface active agent e.g. saponin or a water-soluble colloid and adding said coupler solution to the liquid gelatino silver halide emulsion. Specified colour couplers are those of the formulae:- wherein R1 is a hydroxaryl group, the hydroxy group group being nuclearly attached and the said radical being linked to the benzimidazole nucleus in an ortho position to the said hydroxy group; R 2 is analkyl chain of at least 1 OC; R 3 is an acidic water-solubilising group, R 4 is a phenylene radical; R 5 is the group»NHCOCH2A in which A is chosen from alkaroyl, aryl, cyano and carbethoxy groups; n is 1 or 2, R6 is hydrogen, carboxyalkyl, allyl, alkyl 1-5C; R 7 is alkyl 1-5C, allyl, aryl or a heterocyclic nucleus; and X is halogen or a sulpho group.
