Abstract

1,101,895. Direct positive colour photographic process and materials. EASTMAN KODAK CO. April 9, 1965 [April 9, 1964], No.15124/65. Heading G2C. A direct positive colour photographic image is obtained when a photographic material having an internal latent image silver halide emulsion containing a 5-substituted tetrazole and, in the emulsion or contiguous thereto, a non-diffusing colour coupler capable of forming a diffusible or non-diffusible dye on reaction with oxidized aromatic primary amino developing agent, is exposed and developed with an aqueous alkaline processing solution in the presence of an aromatic primary amino developing agent, the exposed material being fogged before or during development, optionally by the presence of a fogging or nucleating agent. When the colour coupler forms a non- diffusible dye the material is bleached and fixed to give a positive colour transparency or reflection print, and when the coupler forms a diffusible dye the latter is allowed to diffuse to a mordanted receiving sheet in contact with the material. 5-Substituted-tetrazoles specified include, for example, 5-(4'-cyanophenyl)-, 5-(3':4'-dimethoxyphenyl)-, 5-phenyl-, 5-(4'-pyridyl)-, 5-(n-propyl)-, 5-dimethylamino- and 5-benzoyl-tetrazole. The colour developer, which is preferably in the form of a Schiffs base derivative when it is in the emulsion, and the fogging agent may be present in the emulsion or other layer of the material or in the processing solution. Fogging agents mentioned are hydrazines, hydrazides, hydrazones, ethylene bis-(pyridinium) salts and reductones. The materials may contain single or multilayer emulsions, particularly three emulsion layers sensitive to red, green and blue light respectively and having colour couplers forming complementarily coloured dyes, or the differently sensitized emulsions and their couplers may be present as packets in a single layer.
