Abstract

1,045,470. Sewing machines. W. J. CLARKSON Ltd. July 22, 1965 [Sept.14, 1964], No. 37411/64. Addition to 978,872. Heading D1G. Apparatus for simultaneously sewing and cutting a workpiece comprises upper and lower plates, a guide track in the lower plate, a fixed guide element entering the guide track and being formed with a needle-passing hole and a knife-passing slot, and a presser foot mounted above said element and adapted to allow passage of a needle and a knife through said hole and slot respectively. Fabric layers 7, 8 are clamped between an upper plate 2 and a lower plate 3, the plates being hinged together. A plate 13 enters an aperture in the upper plate for fulling the upper layer 7. A guide slot 5 in the lower plate is engaged with a guide element 16 rigid with the thrust plate 19. Element 16, which has a needle-passing hole 20 and a knife passing slot 21 with a bevelled edge 22 so-operating with a knife 26, is substantially semi-circular, the curved edge engaging the outer edge of slot 5. The flat edge of element 16 engaging the miner edge of slot 5 has a forward coupled clearance face 33, Fig 5 (not shown), the needle hole 20 being positioned closely adjacent the junction of said face and said flat edge. The presser foot 23 has a nylon pad 37 engaging the edge of plate 2 adjacent slot 5. The lower face of plate 3 has an insert 35 adjacent slot 5 for engagement by the feed dog 36. The outer edge of plate 3 is engaged by a knurled roller 29 carried by a spring-biased plunger 30.
