1371028 Sewing W J CLARKSON Ltd 26 Oct 1971 [29 Oct 1970 (2)] 51440/70 Heading DIG A work holding template 7 (Fig. 3) has a guiding slot 6 engaged by a cylindrical guide 3 which is fixed to the bed of a sewing machine, and the template is moved past the guide by a roller 33 which engages the edge of the template. The guide 3 has a hole 4 for the needle to pass through and a slot 5 for a knife which cuts the material. The roller is supported on an arm 12 which is pivoted to the bed of the machine at 13 and biased anti-clockwise by a spring 16 and the pulley is driven from the sewing machine rocker shaft through an oscillating arm 18 and a spragtype one-way clutch. The template and material is thus moved only when the needle is out of the material. To prevent the stitch density increasing at convex contours (e.g. at the corners) a second larger co-axial pulley 34 engages the edge 32 of a raised drive part 31, while the corners of the template are cut away so that the smaller pulley does not touch them. For concave contours 48 (Fig. 5) a third smaller co-axial roller is provided, and the template has a hinged top plate 45 which, at the concave section 48, is extended to overlap the lower plate 43 and engage the smaller roller 54 while the lower plate is cut back. A fulling plate 44 is provided, and it is stated that the obtuse angle between the lines AB and AC lies between 190‹ and 270‹. The periphery of the rollers are preferably knurled or V-shaped.
