Abstract

1322267 Sewing machines; folding sheets P E BURTON 12 Oct 1971 47431/71 Headings DIG and D1S In a cutting and hemming apparatus (Fig. 1) cloth from a roll 11 is cut into predetermined lengths and is then moved at right angles along a sewing table where first one edge (20) is hemmed 22. The cloth is then folded so that the opposite edge 28 projects beyond the first edge allowing the second edge to be hemmed 32 by a second sewing machine. Optical sensors 55, activated when the leading edge of the uncut cloth obscures them, stop the cloth drive 15 and actuate the pneumatically operated cutter 16. A pneumatically controlled transfer arm 20, also activated by the sensors, pushes the piece of cloth onto conveyor belts 81. The first edge of the cloth 20 is then trimmed and hemmed by the first sewing machine 22 and the thread cut and sucked away in rotary or other cutters 91. Air from a blower 96, triggered by a sensor 101, then flips the cloth over a folding bar 24 enabling the offset second sewing machine 32 to hem the second edge 28. The uncut cloth may be either carried across the transfer table 18 by air jets from angled openings 106 (Figs. 1, 2) or dragged across by a pneumatically operated brush-like arm (114, Fig. 3, not shown). Roller chains 88 and straps 86 press the cloth against the conveyor belts.
