Abstract
1,045,282. Soot blowers. DIAMOND POWER SPECIALTY CORPORATION. June 19, 1963 [Sept. 10, 1962], No. 24364/63. Heading F2N. A soot-blower comprises a guide means 10 and a carriage 18 movably mounted thereon and rotatably mounting a lance tube 20 including nozzles 24, the lance tube being movable by the carriage to and from a projected position to a retracted position, reversible power means 40, e.g. an electric or fluidpressure motor, drivingly connected through transmission means for moving the carriage and the lance tube between the retracted and projected positions thereof and for simultaneously rotating the lance tube, and means to provide a positive change in the relative speeds of rotation and translation of the lance tube between the projecting and retracting travel of the lance tube. As shown, when the lance tube is in the fully retracted or projected position the carriage trips limit switches LSI and LSI to reverse the motor 40 and the cleaning fluid supply valve 30 connected to the supply tube 28 in telescopic relation with the lance tube 20 is actuated by an actuator 32 on the carriage and operative to engage and pivot a cam 34 on the beam 10 and to which a linkage 36 is connected for operatively opening and closing the valve. The motor 40 is mounted in the carriage or, alternatively, stationarily mounted at the forward or rearward end of the soot blower and provided with a shaft slidingly coupled to a driven member for rotating a shaft on the carriage; the motor is energized either manually or remotely by an operator or in accordance with an automatic sequentially phased control system whereby a preselected operating sequence of the surfaces of a heat-exchanger 14 is obtained. The carriage may be driven along the beam 10 by a sprocket drivingly mounted on the carriage and engageable with a longitudinally extending chain or a rotatable lead screw but, preferably, by a rack-and-pinion 70, 68. The motor output shaft 52 carries a sprocket 74a (Fig. 4, not shown), incorporating a clutch 88 and connected by a chain 86 to a sprocket 74b on a shaft 54 mounted in a gear-box housing 42, the shaft 54 carrying a worm 56 in mesh with a wheel 58 on a shaft 60 carrying the pinion 68. The chain transmission 74 and a similar transmission 72 are operative to drive the shaft 54 at a speed established by the ratios of the transmissions at a constant motor speed the ratio between the diameters of the sprockets 72a, 72b of the transmission 72 being substantially unity whereby the lance tube is rapidly advanced to the projected position, and the ratio between the sprockets 74a, 74b being less than unity whereby the lance tube is retracted slowly from the projected position. Instead of chains, gears, belts and pulleys or friction drives may be used. The lance tube 20 is rotated at constant speed by a drive chain 10. In modifications, (a) the lance tube (Fig. 5, not shown), is rotated more rapidly during the retracting stroke than during the projecting stroke thereof, and (b) the carriage drives 72, 74 and lance tube drives 108, 114 of Figs. 4 and 5, are combined.
