Abstract
In the production of furnace or oil black where a normally liquid feedstock is injected into a highly turbulent, burning or pre-burned, mixture of fuel gas and air, the feedstock is a blend of 85 to 25 parts by weight of a residual oil produced by the thermal and/or catalytic cracking of a petroleum distillate, having a H:C atomic ratio of 1.2 or less and a DEG API gravity of 10 or less together with from 15-17 parts by weight of a petroleum distillate having a H:C atomic ratio of 1.30 or greater and a DEG API gravity between 10 and 30. The preferred composition range is 55-75 parts by weight of residual oil and 45 to 25 parts by weight of said distillate. The residual oil component of the blend preferably has a DEG API gravity of not greater than 5 and the distillate component a DEG API gravity between 15 and 30. An example of the preferred method is given, and the product is a H.A.F. black having lower heat build-up characteristics in cured rubber compositions than blacks preferred from unblended feedstock.
