Headings B3E and B3V. [Also in Division D1] A method of improving the mechanical properties of steel wire rope for reinforcing concrete structures comprises stretching the reinforcement in a longitudinal direction at least up to the yield point or 0À2% proof stress value of the starting material. Steel wire or cable 1 is continuously stretched by passing several loops about a grooved pair of driven wheels 2 between which is arranged a member 3 which applies a force P to the wire. Alternatively the wire is passed over, either pairs of grooved wheels of different diameters and rotating at different speeds, or wheels of the same diameter rotating at different speeds or a pair of two diameter or conical shaped drums rotating at the same speed. The wheels or drums may comprise part of the rope producing machine. The process may also be used as a non-destructive test followed by a magnetic flaw detection test.
