Abstract
1,043,694. Ignition systems. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. June 13, 1963 [July 4, 1962], No. 25598/62. Heading F1B. A gate controlled switch 14 controls current flow in the winding 15 and a switching transformer 25 is provided to successively turn the gate controlled switch on and off by applying positive and negative pulses to its gate. The engine driven interrupter 28 could be replaced by a semi-conductor switch controlled by magnetic or other means. In Fig. 3 when the gate receives a negative pulse energy stored in the inductor 34 changes the capacitor 35. When a positive pulse is applied to the gate the switch 14 conducts and the capacitor discharges through the winding 15. In Fig. 4 the capacitor 35 and winding 15 form an oscillatory circuit when the capacitor 35 discharges. The circuit could be used with low tension surface discharge plugs in which case the voltage developed across the primary winding of the ignition transformer is applied directly to the plugs in turn a separate ignition transformer may be used for each plug Other modifications are described.
