1,042,947. Extruding; forging; making wheel hubs and crankshafts. AUTO-UNION G.m.b.H. May 17, 1963 [May 19, 1962], No. 19704/63. Headings B3A, B3H and B3P. A metal article is made by the successive operations of cold impact extrusion and hot pressing or vice versa. In the manufacture of a wheel hub, a blank 1 is partially cold-impact extruded through a die orifice 6, Fig. 9, and is then pressed between dies 16, 20, Fig. 10, which include heating means. A further hot pressing operation may be performed to produce the finished hub, Fig. 11 (not shown). Other embodiments are described, Figs. 1-9 (not shown) for forming engine crank shafts by cold impact extrusion followed by die pressing after induction heating. The hot pressing may precede the cold impact extrusion or the extrusion may be performed between two hot pressing operations. References are also made to the manufacture of stub shafts, forks and steering knuckle arms.
