Abstract

Synthetic polyamide fibres cut into flock are rendered active in an electrostatic field by treating them with an aqueous solution of an activator comprising an amphoteric compound containing both a sodium sulphate group and a tertiary amino group, a mixture of the amphoteric compound and sodium chloride or a mixture of a fatty acid ester and sodium chloride. The fibres may be treated with the solution for 5-60 minutes at a temperature of 70 DEG -200 DEG F. the fibres may then be centrifuged, dried and maintained under conditions of 30-80% relative humidity at room temperature. The examples refer to the use as the amphoteric compound of the gamma sodium sulphonate of an ethoxylated stearamine and as the fatty acid ester of a mixture of the mono and diglycerides of palmitic acid.
